Back to Basics: Doing Classic Lash Extensions For Clients

If you are new in the lash world, it will definitely take some time to familiarize yourself with all the terminologies, processes, types, and styles. It is hard to keep up, let alone choose the type you want to have.

But, if you still want to try to have lash extensions, a classic eyelash extension is your best bet. It is simple, looks more natural, and is affordable. Also, you won’t have to lie down or sit still for hours.

What are classic lash extensions?

Classic lash extensions are called because they are “classic”. They are very simple, beautiful, and natural-looking. It is the most traditional and popular style many lash lovers tend to go for, especially those who are new to the lash world.

Why? Because they do not put too much strain on your natural eyelashes. You can choose the length, curl, and diameter of the lash extensions. It adds the volume that you get whenever you apply mascara, just without the hassle of having to apply them every day.

However, the look and fullness of your eyelashes will depend on how many your natural lashes are. Classic lash extension is the simplest, quickest, and cheapest one to do. It uses a 1:1 ratio where one eyelash extension is applied to one natural eyelash. Because of this, if you only have a few or sparse natural lashes, you might not be able to get the fullness and volume you want to have.

The whole application will take about an hour up to 2 hours. This will still depend on the state of your natural eyelashes. It needs to be thoroughly cleaned before the procedure.

Benefits of classic lash extensions

Having eyelash extensions will make your life way easier and having classic lash extensions is no exception.

Classic eyelash extensions are famous because they look natural. A lot of women go for this type because of this. There are many benefits to having classic lash extensions. One of them is that they are not too heavy on your natural eyelashes. The application uses a 1:1 ratio. Meaning one lash extension will be attached to one of your natural lashes. It won’t be heavy on your lashes, unlike volume and hybrid lashes. This will still depend on the diameter and length you use for your clients. The longer and thicker the lash extensions used, the heavier they will be.

This type of lash extension enhances the natural lashes, making them look more captivating and fuller without being over dramatic. It works well with your corporate outfit or your typical everyday look.

Having classic eyelash extensions is a great way to decrease the time your client spends putting makeup on. If your client is someone who spends a lot of time in their morning routine applying makeup and styling their hair, having classic eyelash extensions will greatly help you out.

Let your client know about this and how they can save a lot of time. Instead of putting mascara or eye makeup on for hours, they can use this important time to eat breakfast.

Which clients best suit classic lash extensions

If your client has naturally thick and full eyelashes, classic lash extensions is the one for your client. However, if your client has fewer natural eyelashes, you should go for volume lash extensions.

With classic lashes, your client will have an everyday mascara-ready look. Ask your client if they wants that mascara-ready look, they should really consider having classic eyelash extensions.

Which products are good for classic lash extensions

When you undergo eyelash extension application, it doesn’t stop with the lashing. You should point out the importance of aftercare treatment to your clients and how it can affect their lashes, both natural and extensions.

As a lash technician, you can also introduce ways to help your client’s eyelashes grow healthier and longer. That includes habits they have to overcome and products they can use, like lash sealants and serums.

Lash serum for classic lash extensions. Cartel Lash

The main function of a lash sealant is to make a protective barrier on the lashes to stop any elements, such as oil, dust, and debris, from getting into the lash glue used. These elements can make the lash adhesive more brittle causing premature shedding. It also prevents the extensions from twisting and helps extend the life of the lash adhesive used.

Lash sealants are important especially if your clients are exposed to high humidity, sweat, swimming, and oily skin. It is applied just like how mascara is applied. Start at the root of the eyelashes up to the tip. Make sure to apply a lash sealant before putting any makeup on.

It is important to remember to apply lash sealants on clients with classic lash extensions only.

Lash Extensions Bed, Chair, or Massage Bed: Which is Better

When you are starting your lash artist career, one of the biggest investments you will need, aside from lash supplies is the purchase of your lashing bed. This is where your client will have to lie down for hours for eyelash extensions. This is where they will need to feel comfortable and relaxed.

Lash tech applying lash extensions on a client while they lay on a lash bed. Cartel Lash

Meanwhile, you, as the lash artist, need to be comfortable with the height and size of your lash extension bed. In addition, if you offer mobile home services, you will also need to consider its portability.

There are a lot of things to consider and it can be confusing. Let’s take a look into the type of bed you can choose from.

Massage bed for lash extensions

A massage bed is the common go-to and most popular option for a lot of lash artists. Why? Because they are convenient and the client can lie down perfectly flat which is great for a lot of lash artists. However, they may not offer the same amount of comfort for the client during an eyelash extensions treatment

Massage beds and tables are designed with the therapist in mind, to give them the freedom to maneuver, while still maintaining a certain degree of comfort for the client and ergonomic comfort for you while you work. But the main market for this type of bed is for massage, not eyelash extensions. The height of a massage bed or table is usually low so the therapist can put more force into the massage. This might be comfortable for a lash artist, with that said, many massage beds on the market have adjustable heights

Interior of modern massage bed for lash extensions. Cartel Lash

You can find a massage bed that is foldable and easy to carry around as well. This is beneficial for lash artists who offer home services. They typically have a faux leather surface which is very easy to clean and sanitize. A massage bed is very durable and some can even support up to 500lb weight. Although a massage bed is originally designed for massage therapists, these beds are quite versatile and can be the perfect fit for your lashing needs. Remember to look for one that can adjust to your specifications.

Pros

  • Easy to carry around
  • Foldable and compact options
  • Easy to clean
  • Highly durable
  • Offers a flat surface where clients can lie down
  • You can place the lash tools on top of the flat surface

Cons

  • Height might be too low, can cause back and neck pain for the lash artist
  • Can cause strain to the client’s back (depending on how much padding/foam thickness)
  • May not have a lot of legroom

Lash Extensions Chair

A lash extension chair is ideal for lash artists with limited space. The best part of this chair is its functionality. It can be used for a lot of services such as hair services. If you are going for an lash extension chair, look for a reclining one. This way you can easily adjust the reclining angle of the backrest. This is pivotal in providing the right amount of comfort for your clients and functionality for you, the lash artist.

A lash extension chair can hold up to 400lbs. Look for the ones with soft foam and wider width to make sure your clients can comfortably lie down. Check to see how far they recline so you can comfortably apply eyelash extensions. Also, some chairs cannot accommodate pregnant women and heavier clients because of their armrests, this is something you may want to consider.

Pros

  • Space saver
  • Comfortable
  • Adjustable height. (Depending on the reclining angle you choose to get.)

Cons

  • Armrest can limit who can fit in the chair
  • It only reclines, but will not be 100% flat.
  • Can be difficult for lash artists to work on, especially tall ones (not ergonomic)
  • You can not put your lash tools on top of the chair because they will slide

Lash Extensions Bed

A lash extension bed is specifically designed to provide comfort not only to the clients but also to the lash artist. They are 100% flat and you can put all your lash application supplies on top of it without having to worry they will slide or spill.

Lash extensions bed in modern interior. Cartel Lash

A lash extension bed have soft and sturdy padding making it comfortable to lie down for hours. Client comfort is important during eyelash extensions treatments. These beds are height adjustable and have ample legroom making it comfortable and easy to stretch your legs.

Eyelash extensions beds are durable and some can handle more than 500lbs weight. Lashing beds might be the best fit for you if you have the space.

Pros

  • Comfortable for both clients and lash artist
  • Easy to clean (you can use bed covers)
  • Very durable
  • Offers a flat working space
  • Adjustable height (depending on the features your lash bed has)
  • Ample legroom
  • Convenient

Cons

  • Space consuming
  • Not easy to move around
  • Might not be portable (unless you have a portable one)

Not all lash extension supplies are made equal, including a lash extension bed. As with most things, the right bed for you is based on your preference, as well as, the services you offer and the space in your lash room. Convenience and comfort, of course, play a big role too. So when in doubt kick off your shoes, lay down in one and feel it out before you decide.

Top 10 Lash Supplies Must Haves

As a lash tech, there are many lash extension products and supplies you need in your arsenal to be able to provide the best services and produce amazing sets. There are also some products others called “extras” while some products are called “must-haves”. Here are 10 must-have products all lash techs should have in their storage.

Different types of adhesive glue

The adhesive glue is the most important one on this list. You couldn’t add extensions to natural lashes without adhesive glue. Each person is unique and has their own preferences, you may consider having more than one type of adhesive on standby. For example, if a client has sensitive eyes you may want to use an adhesive glue specially formulated with smaller quantities of cyanoacrylate. In addition, the temperature and humidity can also affect the choice of adhesive glue you will use.

Drop of eyelash glue, extensions, and tweezers all needed in lash supplies. Cartel Lash

Here are the factors you need to consider when choosing the adhesive glue you will be using:

  • Drying time: Check the indicated drying time in your lash glue. When choosing the adhesive glue you need to make sure the drying time corresponds to your lashing speed. (But the humidity and temperature will affect the drying and curing time, as well.)
  • Color: There are black and clear adhesives available in the market. Black adhesive is the most commonly used.
  • Fume level: Glues have different levels of smell and fumes. I recommend choosing those with low fumes because fumes might cause eye irritation and eye tearing.
  • Humidity & temperature: The ideal room temperature is 70°F to 80°F while the ideal humidity levels inside your lash room should be 45% to 60%. If the humidity is too high, the drying and curing time will be faster. On the other hand, if the humidity is too low, the drying and curing time will be much slower. (Remember, the drying time indicated in the labels of your lash glue is based on the ideal humidity and temperature.)
  • Period of use: It’s in your best interest to find an adhesive that has quality retention. Your clients will be very satisfied with how long their extensions last between fills.

  • Choose the right eyelash extension glue based on your skill level. This is the best way to start. And if you want to improve your skill, practice and use faster-drying eyelash extension glue to challenge your speed.

    Lash tweezers for each style

Tweezers are a very important tool for all lash techs. You won’t be able to pick up and attach lash extensions without using them. I highly recommend having at least 2 sets of tweezers on hand: an extra pair for isolation and an extra pair for application. Having an extra pair will be helpful in the event the prongs of your tweezers get damaged. The type of tweezers you have will depend on the service you provide.

Illustration of different lash tweezer needed in lash supplies. Cartel Lash

There are 7 types of tweezers based on their tip shape, namely:

  • I Shape: Also called a straight tweezer, it is ideal for isolation and applying classic lash extensions. I highly recommend using tweezers with thin and long I shape tips for isolation. This will make it easier for you to separate lashes. Meanwhile, tweezers with thicker and shorter I shape tips are ideal for classic eyelash extensions.
  • F Shape: Just like I shape, F shape tip tweezers are ideal for both isolation and applying classic eyelash extensions because of their fine and pointed tip.
  • A Shape: This type of tweezer is great for picking up and attaching classic eyelash extensions.
  • X Shape: X shape tweezers are also ideal for classic lash extensions. The only difference is that it is easier and more comfortable to use. It will not cause too much tension in your hands when you hold classic extensions.
  • S Shape: This type of tweezer can be used for isolation for clients with deep set eyes or a prominent forehead. It is ideal for picking up fans and attaching while you are doing volume eyelash extensions.
  • L Shape: This type of tweezer is ideal for making handmade volume fans. L shape tweezers will make it easier for you to pick up and attach handmade volume fans.
  • Round Shape: Round tip tweezers are great for removing tapes and eye pads around the eye area after the whole procedure. Because of its round tip, it is safer to use compared to other types of tweezers.

  • Lash supplies and mirror showing finished lash extensions. Cartel Lash

Hybrid eyelash extensions are a combination of classic and volume lashes. Because of this, you can use different tweezers depending on the type of lash extensions you will be attaching.

Choosing your tweezers is also based on your own preferences and is very individual. The shape you choose may be completely different from another artist that performs the same services. Also, the amount of tension while using the tweezers can be a deciding factor for you as well.

    Quality eyelash extensions

Of course, duh! You need to invest in good-quality lash extensions. Don’t go cheap with lash extensions. Your client will have to wear them and they will notice if their extensions are cheap and of low quality. Your clients should get amazing results for the services they paid for.

Illustration of different lash extensions needed in lash supplies. Cartel Lash

Look for good-quality lash extensions that can hold their curl and still look natural. Keep in stock those types of eyelashes most of your clients go for. You can store variations of lash extensions based on their curls, lengths, and materials. This way, when clients ask for a new look, length, curl, or material, you will be able to provide what they need.

Quality lash extensions should be easy to apply! The lash strips will hold the extensions in place while you work and should not leave residue on the base of the extensions.

    Lash cleanser

Before you can apply lash extensions, you need to clean your client’s eyelashes first to remove all the dirt, debris, and oil stuck in between their lashes and lashline. This will also ensure the eyelash extensions will last longer and the lash adhesive you use will bond properly.

Choose a lash extension friendly lash cleanser without oil and alcohol. Oil and alcohol can make the adhesive brittle and cause premature shedding. It is best to stay away from cleansers with these ingredients.

Lash supplies and lash cleanser on pink and white background. Cartel Lash

Consider keeping extra cleanser on hand for your client’s to purchase for at home aftercare.

    Lash primer and microbrushes

After cleaning your client’s eyelashes, you need to apply a lash primer. A lash primer will make sure there is no oil and debris left in your client’s eyelashes before attaching the extensions. This is a small and simple step but a very needed one. We might not be able to always control the bond of the adhesive or how long the extensions will last. However, what we can do is try to ensure or minimize the oil and debris left on our clients before applying lash extensions.

    Lash spoolies or mascara wands

Spoolies, also called mascara wands, are used to separate lashes. Use spoolies before, during and after the application.

These mascara wands are also a necessity for your aftercare routine. Oil, dirt, and makeup will tend to accumulate in the eyelashes making them clump together or stick in weird angles. This is where you will need spoolies to remove all those dirt without rubbing your eyelashes.

Be gentle when brushing the eyelashes to make them last longer. Do not tug or pull them or the lash extensions will fall off. Follow the curl of the lashes. Consider giving your client the spoolie you used during their service to encourage them to brush their lashes daily, this will keep their lashes looking fluffy and tidy.

    Lash adhesive remover

Lash remover is not always used in lashing services. However, they might come in handy when a client walks into your lash salon or business with weird-looking eyelashes. Here are other reasons why clients might want to remove their lash extensions:

    • Poor applications. You might encounter a client who received a poor lash extension application made by another lash tech and will need to remove them to prevent more damages.
    • Adverse allergic reactions caused by the lash adhesive. Some clients might feel extreme adverse reactions and will need to completely remove their lash extensions.
    • There are also times when clients just want to remove their lash extensions.
    • During a fill, grown out or crooked extensions need to be removed before application.

It is best to be prepared for these circumstances. Make sure you always have an eyelash adhesive remover.

    Nano mister

This is a simple tool that can speed up the curing process of your lash adhesive. Nano misters are usually small and compact in size. It might not look too much but it can cut your lash adhesive from 24 to 48 hours down to only 4 to 10 hours. This is a huge thing!

Lash supplies and nano mister to cure lashes. Cartel Lash

By cutting down the curing time of the lash adhesive you used, you can also minimize the chances of your client’s lash extensions being damaged while the adhesive is still curing. When the lash glue is not fully cured, the bond is not too strong. And a simple rubbing during this time can cause premature shedding and make the lash extensions point in weird angles.

Lash adhesive palette or lash glue ring

This is where you put your lash adhesive during the application. Whichever surface you choose will keep your lash adhesive fresh and within reach.

    Tape and under eye pads

They are both used to separate the top and bottom eyelashes. If you don’t tape the bottom lashes, there is a chance that you might glue your client’s eyelashes shut. This is embarrassing!

I highly recommend using eye pad or eye masks first to secure bottom lashes, then using tape to secure any remaining lashes to the eye pads. If you choose tape and no eye pads, be sure to use medical safe tape. Medical-grade tapes are gentle enough so you can use them around the sensitive and delicate eye area.

Lashing is not easy. But when you use the right tool and lash supplies, it can help relieve some of the fatigue and tiredness you feel. Plus, it can make your lashing faster and easier.

So, be sure to be fully equipped with tools, products, and accessories you are comfortable with. Add to your cart these 10 must haves and make your lash tech life easier.

How to Handle a Client Complaints About Their Lash Extensions

When you hear your client has complaints about their lash extensions, instinctively it can be quite difficult to not become defensive, but you need to STOP right there. Breathe and relax because ultimately the client is always right. Learning to navigate complaints with an open-mind, respect and calmness can make a world of difference to upset clients.

Remember, customer reviews are very important and can make or break your eyelash extensions business. One bad review will negatively affect your lash business’ ranking in Google, or another rating platform such as Yelp.

Show your clients you care by giving them the best customer service. Make them feel like they are important and well taken care of.

Follow these steps and learn how to handle client complaints with grace and patience. So, when your client leaves your lash salon, they will feel important and will more likely to return because they feel valued.

Listen to the complaint about their lash extensions

For any relationship to work, listening is necessary. Try to hold your tongue and listen before you speak and leave your ego and pride aside.

I understand this might be hard, especially when your client is rude. However, all clients want to be heard. Sometimes that’s all they want is to be heard, so give them the time to do just that and when possible find a solution that works for both of you.

Woman upset with lash extensions. Lash supplies at Cartel Lash.

This step is the most important step and try not to rush through it. No matter how frustrated or annoyed your client might be, keep an open mind and be as objective as possible when listening to their complaint about their lash extensions.

Let your client speak and hear them out from start to finish about their complaint about their eyelash extensions. Try to find the root of the problem. Did you miss something during the consultation? Oftentimes, complaints occur due to mismatched expectations and your responsibility now is to find out where the miscommunication happened.

In order to move forward, you must first understand why they are upset and what went wrong. Did their lashes fall out prematurely? Are their lashes too full or not full enough? Did you choose the wrong curl or style?

Remember, how you speak and handle an irate client will greatly affect if they will be coming back and potentially what they will tell their friends.

Book a consultation for their lash extensions

Never try to solve problems over the phone, email, or text messages. Book an appointment with your client, ASAP.

Lash tech booking lash extension appointment on phone for client. Cartel Lash

People like to talk a lot. So, it is best to limit your engagement with them via phone, email, or text. Your client may see this as an opportunity to ask more questions or sway your decision on the spot. Just let your client know that they need to come into your salon asap about their lash extensions. THIS IS PRIORITY!

Let your client know that sending photos of their lashes is not enough to understand what happened and what can be done. Ask them to bring the products they used around their eyes and on their eyelash extensions. This includes the aftercare treatment products and make-up used.

Tell your client it is best to not wear any eye makeup when they come to visit you. This will decrease the chances of further irritation (if the cause of the complaint is eye irritation).

Examine client's lash extensions, routine, and products

Start with examining your client’s eyelashes. Checking their eyelashes will determine your client’s aftercare routine. Look for the following factors and identify if your client’s eyelashes are well taken care of or not:

    • Makeup and/or lotion residue
    • Debris stuck around the eyelashes and lash line
    • Signs of any irritation
    • Gaps in the lash line
    • Broken or any damaged lashes
    • More Anagen phase eyelashes compared to Catagen or Telogen phase eyelashes (meaning natural shedding happened because of the natural hair growth cycle)
    • Oily eyelids
    • Adhesive residue

These factors are all red flags. If your client shows the following signs, it means their lash extensions are not properly taken care of. From here, you can identify the cause of the complaint.

Lash tech using tweezers to examine lash extensions. Cartel Lash

If there are no red flags seen on the eyelashes, look at the products and makeup your client uses. Check whether the makeup your client uses is not waterproof and oil-based. They should be specially formulated safe for eyelash extensions and not random makeup. Otherwise, their lash extensions will not last long and cause premature shedding.

Explain your side about the factors of lash extensions

This is where you need to show your expertise. Explain to your client how oil-based, waterproof, or any makeup not formulated safe for lash extensions can damage their eyelash extensions and cause poor retention. The oils and ingredients in those types of makeup will dry the lash adhesive and shorten the lifespan of their lash extensions.

In addition, removing them will be hard and can take its toll on their natural eyelashes. Remember, rubbing their eyes is one of the common causes of damage and premature shedding.

Check our list of red flags above, if your client has some of those, this is the best time for you to tell them the importance of having a daily aftercare routine. (This should have been explained prior to or after the eyelash extension application.)

Woman washing her face and lash extensions with water. Cartel Lash

If your client is having a reaction to the products used in their eyelashes, it is necessary to first identify if it is an allergic reaction or an irritation. This will help you and your client decide the next steps to take.

Another culprit could be something you did or didn’t do. Were the client’s lashes properly cleansed before application? Did you use enough adhesive? Is your adhesive past it’s shelf life? Is your space too humid? Don’t forget to take a look at what you could have done to prevent poor retention as well.

Offer an alternate solution to lash extensions

Now that you have a full grasp of what the cause of the problem is, it is time to find a solution. Look for a solution where your client and you will both be satisfied. Make sure the solution will not damage you and your lash business’ reputation.

Discuss different options and ask for your client’s feedback. This way, they will feel that you value their input and feelings. Consider a discount on their next service or a free fix right away.  But whatever happens, DO NOT OFFER A REFUND! Your time is precious.

Woman getting lash extensions with lash tech applying extensions with tweezers. Cartel Lash

If your client insists on a refund for their lash extensions, reiterate the part in the waiver or agreement where you specifically mention that refunds are not available (a waiver is very important to have). Tread lightly with this step and read your client. Pointing out that they agreed and signed to something that they now want may only aggravate them further.

That being said, if you have no choice and no signed waiver or agreement, you can offer a refund for eyelash extensions. This is the last resort!

Do a lash removal at no cost

Are the lash extensions causing eye irritation or any allergic reactions? Does your client feel uncomfortable? Do a lash removal for FREE. Consider offering discounts for another service they can use, like a lash lift.

TIP: Avoid needing to be right

As I said before, leave your ego aside. When you talk to clients, you need to attentively listen so they feel safe opening up. Customer satisfaction is the name of the game. Remember that respect will go a long way. I know this is hard especially if they are rude and confrontational.

But as a lash artist, you need to relax and handle this with grace. Listen carefully before you speak and answer politely. You don’t have to show your clients that you are right or make them feel like they are wrong for their complaint of their lash extensions. This will only agitate them and make them feel even more defensive. Nothing will be solved when this happens.

Woman listen to client complaint about lash extensions. Cartel Lash

Breathe. Follow the steps calmly. Show you care. Listen intently and make them feel like they are important, just like in any relationship.

8 Tips to Run Your Business as a New Lash Tech

Do you intend to start your own lash business? Turn your dreams into reality and start your own eyelash extension business! No need to worry. Don’t stress out. Here are 8 tips to help you get started and have your own successful lash business.

As a new lash tech, outline your budget and goals

The first step is to set your goals and determine your budget. Your goals will make it easier for you to make decisions regarding your lash business. It will help you define where your business will go and tell you when you will get there. Setting your goals from the start will motivate you to push forward and boost your effectiveness.

Your goals will affect your budget and vice versa. You have to be mindful of how you spend your budget. Remember to consider your goals. In the long run, you will see the fruit of all your labor and intense budgeting.

Person using laptop with 2022 goals outlined for a lash tech. Cartel Lash

Every lash tech needs an online booking system

As a budding entrepreneur, you have to be mindful of how you spend your money. This is another reason why it is very important to set and outline your budget. Hiring a secretary or assistant might not be within your budget. You will have to pay for their monthly salary, which can be expensive depending on your allocated budget.

Lash businesses thrive when clients schedule appointments, have lash extensions applied and purchase the products you offer. It is important to have someone available to accept calls from clients and keep up with the schedules. This is hard if you are doing everything by yourself. In order to maximize your time and energy, consider signing up for an online booking system that clients can go on to book appointments and sign waiver forms in real time.

A Lash tech needs an online booking systems for clients. Book now on laptop. Cartel Lash

A booking system will allow you to stay on schedule, prevent double bookings and keep track of client information and past service histories. Many booking systems available have a ton of added features to help your business, these added features include (but not limited to) appointment reminder emails and waitlist availability.

Do yourself a favor and do your research on what type of booking systems are out on the market, many have the option for a free trial so you can test which system meets all of your business needs before purchasing.

Balance bookings and personal life as a new lash tech

I know how important it is to have many clients and scheduled bookings, but you have to think about your work life balance. This is sometimes overlooked and not considered until you experience burnout. Work life balance is very important, especially for business owners and entrepreneurs as their work hours are not always clear and defined. Your business is a reflection on how well you take care of your physical and mental health.

Life and work balance with lash tech using her laptop. Cartel Lash

In order to prioritize your well being make it a point to not take too many clients. Set realistic expectations about how many clients you want to take per day and consider allocating set days off.  Make sure you still have time left to spend with the people that matter: your family, friends, and yourself.

Lash techs need to finalize pricing for service and products

Before you set your prices for the products and services you offer, you will need to compare the pricing offered by your local competitors. Your pricing shouldn’t be too high or too low, you want to attract potential clients and still make money.

The price you charge will ultimately depend on where you live and what other lash artists are charging, your skillset and how much experience you have. When building your clientele, consider offering limited time promotions on new services.

When it comes to market research a great way to collect information and see all the services and products they offer is to pose as a potential client and visit your nearby competitors. You will be able to get a snapshot of services, products and pricing. Having said that, many businesses have a website or social media account with such information making your research much easier.

Before and after of eyelash extension treatment done by lash tech. Cartel Lash

With retail products your supplier may have a suggested retail price or the MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price), most vendors will stick to this suggestion to ensure the highest profit margins.

Set up space and décor as a lash tech welcoming new clients

Are you setting up your lash business at home or a separate establishment? If you are setting up your business at home, this will be easier, quicker, and more cost-effective. Meanwhile, if you are planning to use a separate establishment, you need thorough planning.

When setting up and decorating the space for your lash business, you need to think of your budget. If you have a small budget, think about upcycling some furniture, accessories, and décor from your home that you do not use. Look around your house and storage, there might be pieces in there that you can upcycle.

For example, you may find cabinetry in your attic. Clean it out and apply a layer of varnish or repaint it.

Have a social media presence if you are a new lash tech

In this day and age, almost everyone has their own social media accounts. It is one of the easiest, fastest, and affordable ways to gain clients and expand your reach.

Lash extension strips on the hand of lash tech. Cartel Lash

Create a social media account solely for your lash business. Update it regularly. Make sure you post the certificates you’ve earned as well as any special achievements related to your lashing business. Post lash quotes and customer reviews! Pictures of your work are like your business cards, they speak volumes to potential and can motivate them to use your services in the future.

Promote safety as a lash tech

Safety should be your #1 priority. You have to show your clients that your lash salon and business is comfortable, safe, and will provide outstanding services and products

Also, because of Covid-19, people have become more cautious and careful. Knowing safety is a priority helps build confidence in your brand. Clients want to be reminded and reassured about health and safety protocols, they also want to know that every client needs to follow the same rules and regulations you, as a business, have set in place. You want your clients to feel at ease and able to enjoy visiting your lash salon.

Buy quality and reputable lash supplies

To be able to provide the best services to your clients, you need to use good-quality and reputable lash supplies. Your budget might limit your purchases. But keep in mind, not all expensive products are good and not all cheap ones are bad. Check all the customer reviews for a specific product and brand in order to help you make the right decisions.

Look for products that are within your budget but still good quality. There are reputable brands that offer sustainable and affordable products like Borboleta, Eyelash Maker, Glamcor, Lash Artisan, Lash God, LBLA, Max2Originale, My Brand Lashes, Ruthie Belle, Sugarlash, and Untamed Artistry.

How to Choose the Right Lash Pillow For Clients

The lashing pillow you choose is just as important as the lash room and bed you use. Try not to overlook how vital this decision is, as it adds comfort for your client and can create the perfect setting for a much needed lash nap.

Lash pillows not only make your client feel more comfortable but they also provide support to you, as a lash artist. When clients have to spend hours lying down, they tend to move their heads around. The more time a client shifts around to readjust takes away from your overall lashing time and will affect your efficiency and productivity. In some cases, it may even cause you to make mistakes which is not ideal.

Woman getting lash extension treatment while resting on lash pillow. Cartel Lash

The best pillow will have a place for you to rest your arms as well. Remember that your comfort is equally as important. A trusted lashing pillow will greatly improve your body posture, boost your productivity, and increase your efficiency.

Now that you know why a good lash pillow is important, it is time to look for one. Here are 5 best pillow shapes you need to consider when you are looking for a lash pillow:

    Normal lash pillow

A normal pillow is comfortable if you are lashing for short periods of time and potentially for longer periods if your client is able to move around and change positions. But that’s just it, having this type of pillow does not provide your client with enough head and neck support which really limits the amount of time you can lash comfortably.

In addition, lash artists tend to rest their forearms on the sides of the pillow, this prevents an artist from getting tired too quickly, however normal pillows tend to be quite soft and may not support as much as needed. This could will your efficiency and productivity.

Lash tech using lash pillow as support during lash extension treatment. Cartel Lash

When your arms and hands get tired, you will need to stop, rest, and stretch in order to get back to lashing. The strain in your hands and arms will greatly affect your work. In addition, normal pillows won’t have a platform where you can put your lashing tile. Having a platform where you can easily access all lash extensions and adhesive you need can make all the difference during a lash extension application and greatly increase your productivity.

Normal pillows are not made for lash artists.

    Headpiece lash pillow

If you use a massage table as your lash bed, you will probably have a headpiece pillow already. For the clients, headpiece pillows are very convenient but they are not comfortable. They are usually on the tougher side and if your client has to lie down on it for hours, they will probably feel uncomfortable in their neck area.

For a lash artist, it won’t have the support you need. Without support, your arms will have to be in the air or resting on the top of the bed, throughout the application. This is not very comfortable for you either. There is also a chance for you to develop carpal tunnel syndrome

    Neck lash pillow

Neck pillows are the ones you usually carry around when traveling. They are light, soft, and might be practical when traveling but for applying eyelash extensions, they are NOT. Neck pillows offer a bit of support to the clients but don’t offer any kind of support whatsoever to the lash artists. Having said that, you may want to keep a neck pillow on hand for clients that need additional support with the lash pillow you choose to use.

    U-shaped lash pillow

A u-shaped lash pillow is specifically designed to accommodate every lash bed. These pillows are engineered with a u-shaped middle that cradles your client’s head and neck comfortably. Its high flat sides are the perfect spot for your lashing tiles, keeping everything you need within reach and increasing your productivity exponentially. U-shaped pillows provide ample room to rest your arms and wrists while lashing. U-shaped pillows were made with the lash artist’s needs in mind.

    Ergonomic lash pillow

An ergonomic lash pillow is one that provides comfort and support for both you and your client. It has just the right amount of neck support and elevation for your client to lay comfortably for hours. Similar to the U-shaped pillow, it provides a platform with adequate space for your lashing tile to sit on.

Woman laying on an ergonomic lash pillow. Cartel Lash

All 5 lash pillows have their pros and cons and can benefit clients who have their own preferences. If possible, consider having more than one type of lash pillow on hand or having an extra pillow for clients needing additional comfort.

For example, pregnant clients may need to use an extra pillow in between their legs or under their backs. When in doubt and if your space allows, have a normal lash pillow on hand just in case. Remember, comfort is key, for you and your client.  If you are comfortable, you will be less tired and be able to accept more clients. Meaning more $$$!

    Firmness of the lash pillow

Aside from the type and shape of the lash pillow, you need to think about the firmness of it as well. If it is too soft, your client will sink into the pillow. It might seem comfortable at first, but after a few hours, they will need to stretch their neck because there is not enough elevation. For lash artists, a super soft lash pillow won’t be able to provide the proper arm support, leaving you to feel tired. Conversely, if the lash pillow is too hard, it will be uncomfortable for your clients.

Make sure you choose the correct firmness. Many lash artists choose a memory foam pillow for this very reason.

    Lash pillow covers for hygiene

Lash pillows are not disposable. You will need to reuse them. Putting a disposable pillow cover on top of the pillowcase will make it more hygienic and convenient. Most pillow covers have a waterproof backing to prevent your pillowcase and pillow from getting wet, this is important if your client comes with wet hair or if they come straight from the gym.

Having disposable pillow covers is super convenient because you no longer have to replace your pillowcase between clients but it also means that you don’t need a ton of spare pillowcases. This also means that you save time and money by not having to do more laundry.

If you choose to use a pillowcase without a pillow cover on top, choose a pillowcase that is soft, removable, and washable. You can also take into consideration the color and design of the covers. Make it calm and pleasing to the eyes, this will add to the overall ambiance of your space.

Type of material for lash pillow

Lash pillows are commonly made of cotton, memory foam, etc. But the usual go-to of various lash artists is memory foam. Because they are sturdy and comfortable for both the client and the artist. The memory foam is firm and easily molds to contour the shape of your client’s head providing the utmost comfort and support.

Cotton and down filled pillows are soft and comfortable. However, they may seem  comfortable for the client initially but won’t provide the firmness needed for long lashing sessions. In addition, cotton and down filled pillows need regular cleaning or replacing because they are prone to mold and dust mites.

Lash tech applying lash extensions with lash pillow as a support. Cartel Lash

To get the best pillow for lash extensions, you need to consider your client’s and your comfort. Your client will have to stay lying down for hours while you work on their lash extensions. To make sure your clients return, you have to make them feel comfortable and relaxed.

As mentioned, your comfort is equally as important. It takes at least an hour to do fills and touch-ups. Overtime, not having the right support may cause your body to feel tired and sore, sometimes causing carpal tunnel syndrome. Finding a pillow that gives you the support you need will help your productivity tenfold!

When lashing, it is important to take care of yourself and your health! Not only will this help you in the short term but this will make sure you have a long and fruitful lashing career.

10 Lash Pro Tips to Growing your Eyelash Salon

Are you new to the lash game? Or wanting to expand your clientele? It might be unnerving especially if you are unsure where to start. But remember, all businesses need to start somewhere. Every eyelash salon goes through this process. So, no need to feel pressured and overwhelmed. I am here to help you out with some key business development ideas. From social media to eyelash supplies, here are 9 tips to help build your lash clientele:

Create social media accounts for your eyelash salon

In this day and age, nearly everyone has their own social media account. Posting creative content, with images, has become somewhat effortless, as many of these platforms come with built in features and editing tools. Many small business owners choose to create separate pages and accounts specifically for their business, making it easier to manage both personal and professional accounts.

The majority of lash entrepreneurs choose to focus on Facebook and Instagram because they are very common (Facebook has over 1 billion active users!). With Facebook, you can post images with ad copies (advertising copy and hashtags making it easier for you to target specific clientele.

Meanwhile, Instagram is very visual. You can post images of your clients, the products you use, and your lash room. It is also easy to engage on Facebook and Instagram making both platforms very user friendly.

In more recent years, TikTok has also gained popularity, its content consists of short and entertaining video clips. Twitter, on the other hand, is a platform that is meant for quick short messages, shared between followers and other users. Twitter users can also link videos or other content to a post, making Twitter more versatile. Many businesses now use TikTok and Twitter to engage with clients.

Post on your eyelash salon page regularly

Building clientele with the help of social media doesn’t end in just making the account or page, you have to post and update regularly. Set a few minutes a day to update your accounts and pages to increase engagement.

If you are running out of ideas, you can share a simple lash quote. Or post photos of the eyelash supplies you use. It is also a great idea to post clients before and after photos. But for this, you have to ask your client if they consent to you posting their photos. You can also share photos of your eyelash salon and lash room.

Pro tip: always cite your source if you are reposting or using someone else’s content and don’t forget to ask for permission first whenever necessary!

Just make sure to be consistent and post regularly. This will let people know you are still active in the eyelash salon. Many content creators plan what they will post beforehand, using calendars to track down what they will post and when, this often makes posting more seamless and organized.

Also, this is a convenient and FREE way for you to advertise and market your expertise. Take advantage!

Request and repost reviews for your eyelash salon page

If your client is fully satisfied with your work, they will surely be willing to post reviews for you. This is why customer satisfaction is really important. As a lash artist and entrepreneur, you need to make sure your clients get the best service, products, and care. Always ensure your eyelash supplies are not past the expiration date by keeping track of the shelf life

Don’t hesitate to ask your clients for reviews. You can also repost the reviews they post on their own social media account. It is a great way to show possible clients of your work.

People always check a company’s reviews before buying products or trying a service. For example, if you are going to buy an eyeshadow, would you buy from a store with zero reviews over a store with hundreds of happy customer reviews? Of course not, you will buy from the store with many happy customer reviews. This is an example of how customer reviews can affect your business.

Review platforms like Yelp and Google can also help bring more clientele. Creating a business account on these sites is easy to do and free. Clients can post reviews and photos, as well as find a business's contact information, hours and website.

Ask friends and family to share your eyelash salon page

Never hesitate to ask for help from your family and friends. They are the ones who would love to see you succeed. Don’t be shy to ask for support.

When you are starting your eyelash salon, it is only normal to have your family and friends as your first clients or models. Once you feel more confident, you can ask them for more feedback with your work.

From there, ask them to post a photo or review on their social media accounts. This will help you expand your clientele by spreading the word to their friends, family, and colleagues.

You would be surprised to see how much support you’ll receive from the people you know and trust!

Share useful information on your eyelash salon page

This is important. Sharing useful information about your business and yourself, as a lash artist or entrepreneur, keeps you relevant and relatable.

For example, if you underwent different training programs to learn and improve your lashing skills, you can share it on your business accounts and pages. This will build and increase your trust rating, most especially if you can show pieces of evidence, such as certificates, photos taken with experts in the lash biz. These posts help build your brand and overall reputation.

Think about it, if you want to have your car fixed, will you hire someone with training and experience or a person without any kind of training, like a total newbie? Of course, you will hire a person with training and experience.

If you took training on how to apply volume lashes, post it on your accounts and pages. This could be a photo of all the amazing fans you created while practicing and in the comments you could shout out your volume trainer! Lash enthusiasts appreciate the time and energy it takes to master a new skill!

Offer reward system and discounts at your eyelash salon

A great way to show your gratitude and appreciation towards your clients is to offer discounts and a reward system. When your clients are happy about the services, products, and rewards they get and experience, they will surely let their friends know about it. Word of mouth is one of the most effective ways to expand your clientele.

Most importantly, building good relationships with your clients is the best way for them to keep coming back. Offering discounts or a reward system can help improve that relationship.

TIP: Offer a referral discount to your loyal clients. This will make sure they come back and bring friends too!

Ensure professional and consistent service every time

Make sure the services you offer are always consistently good. Whenever your client has a great experience and outstanding results, your client will let their friends know about it. However, if they don’t get consistent results, your client will also let their friends know. This is not good for your lash salon’s image.

Clients like knowing what to expect and value reliability. If you make it a point to never run late or cut corners while lashing, clients will value that professionalism and in turn your reputation and brand become known for such things.

    Follow up with clients

Customer satisfaction is one of the ways to gain client loyalty and expand your clientele. Checking in with your clients after a service or a product purchase gives them the opportunity to share with you what they liked or disliked. If a client had a bad experience, they may not feel comfortable reaching out to you on their own, following up with them gives you a chance to sort out any issues that would prevent them from coming back.

    Use quality lash supplies

Always make sure the products you use and sell in your lash salon are of great quality. Buy eyelash extensions online at Cartel Lash to ensure consistent eyelash supplies every time.

Don’t forget your space matters too! Make sure your lash rooms should be relaxing, welcoming, and comfortable to ensure your clients can rest and have a calming experience. Lash Lift Treatments: Are They Worth It

One of the fastest and easiest ways to change how you look without needing to spend hours lying down every 2-4 weeks is a lash lift. It is totally painless, affordable, and quick. After the treatment, your natural lashes will have the lovely curl you’ve been dreaming of.

Imagine, waking up every morning with camera ready lashes without putting any effort fumbling around with a lash curler. No need to curl your lashes every day before going to school or work!

Here is everything you need to know about the lash lift and tint procedure and how they can make your life easier.

    What is a lash lift

A lash lift is like a perm for your eyelashes! Silicon rods and perming solution are used to curl your natural lashes upwards, very similar to the results you could achieve with an eyelash curler. A lash lift highlight your eyes by opening them up and making your lashes appear longer.

Lash tinting is often paired with a lash lift service. Special dye is used after a lash lift to darken your natural lashes, giving you the look of mascara covered lashes. The combination of lash lift and tint leaves your eyelashes looking glamorous and picture-ready without wearing any makeup.

How does a lash lift work

Before any lash service, make sure to do a thorough consultation. This will ensure your expectations are the same and prevent any issues down the road. Consultations are a great time to answer any questions or concerns, as well as, addressing any unrealistic expectations. The last thing you want is to give your client a false idea of what you can achieve with their natural eyelashes.

Steps for a lash lift treatment

After the consultation, your lash tech will clean your eye area including your eyelashes. It should be thoroughly cleaned removing any oil, makeup, debris, and dirt. Once cleaned and dried, your bottom lashes will be separated with tape from your top lashes.

Next a silicone rod will be placed right above your lash line and secured using a specially formulated fixing gel. The rod you use will depend on the curl you wish to achieve, as well as, the length of your natural lashes. Once the rod is in place, the fixing gel is then used to adhere the top lashes along the rod.

Each strand is combed straight in an upwards fashion. This process should not be rushed, as the position the lashes are in is how they will look once perming is finished. Then, a 100% eye-safe perming solution will be applied to the natural lashes. This solution will break down the bonds in your eyelashes allowing them to curl and change their shape.

Lash tech applying lash lift solution to eyelashes at an eyelash salon. Cartel Lash

The solution will be left on anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes. This will depend on the client’s natural lashes and the lash lift brand you are using. When ready the perming solution is carefully removed and the second solution is placed.

The second and final solution is a neutralizing solution, this is used to stop the perming process and kept on for the same duration of time as the perming solution. Once sufficient time has been reached the neutralizing solution is carefully removed.

Many lash lift kits contain a cleansing solution to remove the fixing gel from the client’s natural lashes, but some technicians choose to use warm water to loosen both natural lashes and the silicon rods.

How long does a lash lift treatment take

A Lash lift takes approximately 40 minutes to an hour from start to finish. How long the treatment takes can depend on the state of your eyelashes and how clean they are initially. If you are wearing waterproof eye makeup, this will take longer because the lash tech needs to remove all the makeup thoroughly.

Some lash salons may require a patch test 48 hours prior to your appointment. A patch test is a great way to test if the chemical solution will not cause any irritation or adverse effects.

How is a lash lift different than lash extensions

Both procedures will make your eyelashes look longer and fuller. However, the whole process and application are different.

With eyelash extensions, each individual extension is applied and bonded to your natural lashes using a specially formulated lash adhesive. Lash extensions can be more dramatic than a lash lift, as they create the fullness and length you weren’t naturally born with. The whole application can take 1 to 4 hours, depending on the type of extensions and style you want to achieve.

Lash tech applying lash lift treatment at eyelash salon. Cartel Lash

During a lash lift and tint, your natural lashes are curled using an eye-safe perming solution to shape and curl your lashes. You will leave looking like your eyelashes were curled using an eyelash curler. In most cases the whole process will only take an hour, max.

When it comes to maintenance, a lash lift is more convenient. A thorough and deep daily aftercare is needed to maintain your eyelash extensions. If it is not well maintained, your lash extensions will be damaged and cause premature shedding. With fill and touch-ups, you will need to go back to your lash tech every 2 to 3 weeks.

Meanwhile, lash lift maintenance is way easier. You just need to avoid any water, makeup, steam, or makeup remover for 24 hours after the treatment. After that, you treat your eyelashes as you always do.

Clients wishing for more length and fullness can use an eyelash serum during this time. When it comes to touch-ups, you can go back to the lash salon around 6-8 weeks after the treatment, depending on your eyelash cycle.

Can you use mascara with a lash lift

No mascara for 24 hours after the lash lift and tint treatment. Usually, the lash artists will tell you not to wear any eye makeup, including mascara during this time. Your eyelashes need to be fully and correctly set before using any mascara.

After 24 hours, you can treat your eyelashes just like you normally do.

Woman with long eyelashes putting on mascara. Cartel Lash

Make sure the mascara you are using is not waterproof because removing it can be tedious. Go for protein-rich mascaras with conditioning ingredients. This will be better for your natural eyelashes.

How long does a lash lift last

The lifespan and effectiveness of your lash lift will usually last from 6 to 8 weeks. However, your lifestyle will greatly affect its effectiveness. If you are someone with an active lifestyle who loves to sweat or lives in a place with warm weather, you might need to undergo a lash lift sooner.

Having perfectly curled eyelashes 24/7 for 6 to 8 weeks is really enticing. On top of that, it needs little to no maintenance or special care. You can wear oil-free eye makeup and removers after 24 hours.

If you are interested in having a lash lift yourself, call your lovely and friendly lash tech and ask for advice. They will surely be happy to help you out.
