Drying or Curing for Lash Extensions: What’s the Difference

Learning new things is always a good thing. Whether you are new to the lash industry or an expert lash artist, understanding what happens in an eyelash extension application is always important.

Lash artists always mention curing and drying when they talk about eyelash glue and adhesive. Aren’t they the same? No, my friend. Curing and drying are not the same. There are differences in the process. It is ideal for all lash lovers and technicians to understand drying and curing and how it affects your lash extensions.

Many lash lovers think that all the lash technicians have to do is dip the extension into the glue then apply. The process of the whole application is more than that. That is why I am here to help you identify the difference between drying and curing, the process behind each, and the factors that can affect the retention of the lash glue.

What is drying?

Drying is when the exterior or the outer layer of the adhesive dries just enough for the lash technician to continue applying more lash extensions. If the lash adhesive is not dry enough, there is a tendency that lash extensions will clump together and get stuck with neighboring lashes.

The more technical explanation is that drying is a process in which the chemical ingredients in the adhesive evaporate in the air making it harder and easier to work with. When the adhesive is dry, the lash technician can move on to the next lash extension, safely.

There are quick-drying lash adhesives available in the market, like Untamed Artistry Retention Black Adhesive and LBLA Superhero Adhesive. These types of adhesive dry in 1 second, letting the lash technician apply lash extensions faster. However, for beginner lash technicians, it might be too quick-drying. Make sure to choose the adhesive that fits your comfort and skill level.

What is curing?

Curing explains the chemical process the adhesive takes going from a liquid to a solid form.  The curing process needs moisture in the air to fully dry all the layers of the adhesive. Usually, it takes at least 24 hours up to 48 hours to thoroughly cure the adhesive. During this time, it is VERY IMPORTANT to make sure the adhesive doesn’t make contact with water.

This is the main reason why lash artists tell their clients to not go swimming within 24 to 48 hours after the application. If the client lets their eyelash extensions get wet within this duration, it can cause premature fallout of the lash extensions. Avoid any hot and humid places.

Woman with long lash extensions with leaf of monstera and water droplets. Cartel Lash

The curing process will greatly depend on the moisture in the air and humidity. Because the moisture in the air will help cure the lash glue and dry quicker.

Why is it important to thoroughly cure the lash adhesive? Because it will affect the retention of the adhesive. If your lash adhesive is not properly cured, the lash extensions will not last that long. Your money will go to waste.

How does humidity affect lash glue and retention?

Adhesives become less effective when the humidity is high without the right care and treatment. The optimal humidity for the majority of lash glues available in the market is between 45% and 65%.

In general, when the humidity is too low, the curing speed of the lash adhesive slows down which might lead to blooming. This usually happens when the humidity is lower than 45%. The fumes coming from the adhesive will transfer to the client’s eyes causing irritation, burning, inflammation, and tearing. The problem is, when this happens it will be a nasty cycle of blooming. Remember, when there is water, the lash adhesive will go. In addition, the lash extensions might end up clamping together, leaning, or slipping if the humidity is too low.

Meanwhile, when the humidity is too high, the curing process will be too quick leading to poor eyelash extensions attachment. There is a chance when the lash adhesive might be partially cured even before the lash artist starts attaching the extensions. It can also lead to a clumpy look and leave adhesive beads in the client’s eyes. If the adhesive cure quickly, it might not fully wrap around the client’s natural eyelashes causing the clumpy look and beads to form. This is not pleasing to the eyes and I’m sure your client will not be happy about this.

Blooming might also happen when the humidity is too high, above 65%.

What is the ideal humidity for a lash room?

The ideal humidity in the lash room should be between 45% and 65% range in order to enjoy the optimum performance of the lash adhesives. You can also check the features of the lash adhesive before application to know exactly what is the optimum humidity range.

Bbluv Hygrometer for lash extensions treatment. Cartel Lash

I understand that each lash room might have different humidity and temperature. That is why it is imperative to have the right tools so your adhesive will cure properly, the lash extensions will last, and your clients will be happy with your service. And to properly measure the temperature and humidity in the lash room, it is very important to use BBLUV Hygrometer and Thermometer.

This tool is an alarm clock, digital thermometer, and hygrometer all in one. You can time yourself to know how long it takes for you to apply lash extensions and get the temperature and humidity in your lash room. Use it in your lash room to help make sure the temperature and humidity is the most ideal environment for the eyelash extension application.

Can you speed up the curing process?

Yes, you can! All you need is to use a nano mister. Nano misters are the easiest and faster way to add moisture to the air which speeds the curing process of the eyelash glue. Pair your hygrometer with a nano mister to maintain the ideal humidity in your lash room. Use it when the humidity is too low.

If you are using a nano mister, make sure that you are not pointing it too near to your client’s eyes. Hold it at a reasonable height, at least 15 inches over your client’s eyelashes. Turn the nano mister on. Don’t over-expose the lash adhesives to the nano mister. Sometimes, nano misters automatically turn off around 30 seconds. If your nano mister is not like this, turn it off manually at 30 seconds.

There are other advantages of using nano mister in your lash room aside from speeding up the curing process. For example, it minimizes the fumes emitting into the air which is the common cause of eye irritation. And, this is the best news for all lash lovers, using nano misters can reduce the waiting time required to get your eyelashes wet. Your clients will not have to wait for 24 hours up to 48 hours. You, the lash technician, will have fewer things to worry about!

But make sure not to overuse your nano mister because it might cause problems like weakening of the adhesive’s retention.

The curing and drying time of the lash adhesives will greatly affect its retention and how long the eyelash extensions last. It is best to know how factors like humidity and temperature can affect your glue and what are the tools you can use to help you out.

Know the Shelf Life of Your Lash Extensions Supplies

Did you know expiration dates are not only applicable to food but also to your lash supplies? If you are not sure if the supplies you have in your storage are still usable, it is best to check their expiration date and shelf life. Check every product you have in your storage and make sure each one is still usable. Remember, the supplies and lash products you use on your clients can affect the retention and quality of the eyelash extensions you applied to your clients.

Why proper storage is important

Looking after all the products and materials you use is very important to build a good image for your lash business. When all the lash supplies are properly cared for and stored, they will maintain their quality. Meaning, the services you offer will be consistent. Unlike when the products you use are not well taken care of.

Disinfect and clean lash tweezers and tools for eyelash extensions. Cartel Lash

For example, if your lash glue is not stored in a cool dry area, it can negatively affect the retention of the lash glue.

Meanwhile, if the tools you use are not properly cleaned and maintained, your accuracy, efficiency, and speed will be affected. Be sure to equally take care of your tools as well.

Lash Adhesive: Unopened 6 months

Lash adhesive is one of the most important lash supplies you need to check regularly. The quality of the lash glue you are using will affect the lifespan of the eyelash extensions you apply.

Different lash adhesives have different manufacturers and ingredients. Hence, each has different expiration dates as well. In general, lash adhesives when unopened and stored in a cool and dry place, can last up to 6 months. Open adhesive that is stored in a cool and dry place, can last 4-6 weeks. That being said, the temperature and humidity of your storage can also affect the condition of your adhesive.

Remember, the main ingredient in all lash adhesives is cyanoacrylate which is known to break down over time. The longer you store your lash adhesive in a not-so-ideal environment can cause cyanoacrylate to break down faster affecting the bond. Also, all the ingredients will start to separate as time goes by, weakening the bond.

No matter how you store your lash adhesive, I highly recommend shaking it well before using it. This is to ensure all the ingredients are properly emulsified (mixed).

Lash Bonder: up to 6 months

Lash bonder is specifically formulated to speed up the curing process of the lash adhesive. It instantly cures the bond from outside to inside. Because of the fast curing process, your client will not feel any irritation from the fumes that may come from the adhesive.

Just like lash adhesives, the manufacturer, humidity, and temperature can greatly affect the storage life of your lash bonder. It can last up to 6 months. But for the exact product shelf life, it is best to check the information on that particular bonder. Some lash bonders can only last up to 3 months while some can last up to 6 months.

Lash Cleansers: 6-9 months

Aftercare treatment and the daily routine of your clients can greatly affect the retention of their eyelash extensions. It is important for you to let your clients know that their cleansers from last year will not be as effective now compared to when they first bought them, but this really depends on the date they were first opened.

Lash cleansers are also important in all lash extension applications. You need to thoroughly clean your client’s eyelashes and lash line before the application. Clean eyelashes and lash lines mean the adhesive will bond better and longer.

Woman getting eyelashes cleaned for eyelash extension procedure. Cartel Lash

That is why you need to make sure your lash cleansers are always fresh. The ingredients used to make lash cleansers that you love, such as green tea extracts, cucumber, and aloe vera, can soil over time.

Try to finish a bottle first before opening another one. However, if you are not able to do so, a good rule of thumb is to replace your opened bottle every 6 to 9 months.

Lash Remover: up to 6 months

The lifespan and shelf life of the lash remover will depend on the manufacturer and the environment it is stored in. When the bottle of cream type lash remover is unopened, typically it can last up to 2 years but once opened, you need to use it within 6 months. Again, I suggest checking the manufacturer’s notes to make sure you are not using expired eyelash adhesive remover.

When you are using liquid or gel type lash glue removers, unopened products can last up to 1 year. But when the bottle is opened, it can last up to 6 months if stored in the right conditions.

Lash artist removing eyelash extensions with lash tweezers. Cartel Lash

If your lash remover is not as effective, it will be hard for you to remove all the lash extensions you applied. You will need to apply the lash remover many times to remove all the eyelash extensions. Pulling or rubbing can cause the natural eyelashes to be damaged or make your client uncomfortable. Using old removers overall is a bad idea. Make sure to check your lash remover first before using, consider applying the remover to 1 extension first to check its effectiveness.

For best results, store your lash remover away from direct sunlight. Keep it in a cool and dry place.

Lash Primer: up to 6 months

Lash primers usually contain alcohol which helps it last up to 3 years when the bottle is unopened. If the bottle is opened it can last up to 6 months depending on the environment it is stored in.

Primers help dissolve all the natural oils and any leftover makeup residue in your client’s natural eyelashes. Eyelash primers also help balance the pH level of your natural lashes. Resulting in a better bond between your client’s natural eyelashes and the lash extensions. Lash primers are used to ensure longer and better retention of the eyelash extensions.

Make sure to check the shelf life of your lash primers before using them.

When to replace lash supplies?

Replace your lash supplies when they are beyond the shelf life indicated by the manufacturer. You have to keep your lash salon and business as hygienic and clean as possible and utilize proper storage practices for all your supplies. This will give a good image for yourself as a lash artist and salon.

Maintaining quality and fresh lash supplies will also reflect your work ethic. It will show your clients that you put their needs and comfort first. Being mindful of your supplies and the individual shelf life will greatly impact your thriving lash business.

8 Ways to Make Your Salon More Sustainable

As business owners, we all know how important it is for our business to be sustainable, both financially and environmentally. First, you need to make sure your business prospers and is financially profitable. From there, you will want to protect your brand and maybe even decide to expand, by hiring employees and delegating duties.

Eyelash extension procedure at lash salon. Cartel Lash

Ensuring your lash salon is environmentally sustainable could help you save money by reducing your operating expenses. Also, these days, people are becoming more and more aware of the carbon footprint they leave behind. Especially, when it comes to the products they use and will be using on themselves. You can use this to your advantage and market your lash business as “eco-friendly” if you are committed to going “green”.

Here are 8 ways you can make your lash salon sustainable and decrease your overall carbon footprint. Whenever possible, remember the three “R’s”: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

1. Change light bulbs to LED

Always invest in energy-efficient light bulbs. LED bulbs are more energy-efficient compared to incandescent bulbs because LEDs operate on diode light which is known to be more efficient than filament light (which is what incandescent bulbs operate on). They consume 75% less energy and they last longer compared to your regular light bulbs.

You will save more on your monthly electric bill, as well as the cost of having to replace your light bulbs often. A win-win situation!

2. Choose energy saving options

The best way to save on your energy consumption is to only use appliances when you need them. But that will be hard if it is too hot and you need an AC to cool the room. A lash room needs to be comfortable, and no client will feel at ease when it is a hundred degrees. More importantly, your lash adhesive performs the best in an optimal temperature and humidity level.

The use of a humidifier year round might be required if you live in a dry climate and this saving option is no longer applicable. The same thing can be said if you live in a very warm climate and need the AC 24/7. If the use of a humidifier, or any other temperature/humidity regulating machine, is a must for your adhesive, consider a few of these other energy saving tips.

Humidifier in the lash salon. Cartel Lash

Too sunny? Consider hanging window coverings that will block radiant heat from entering your space. This can help preserve the coolness inside the room as curtains are also a great insulator. This will be useful during the winter season as well (depending on where you live).

Another option could be tinting your windows to block the sunlight and UV rays. This option could greatly help you save on your monthly energy bills.

3. Rethink Single Use Items

As a responsible lash business owner, you need to take this into consideration. This may be a bit tricky because the single use items we use on clients, such as microfiber brushes or lash brushes do not have reusable alternatives. Also, due to Covid, we need to be extra careful with spreading germs and how well we sanitize our spaces.

Having said that, one area you could consider is using reusable cleaning clothes instead of paper towels, as long as you know how to properly disinfect them and can clean them properly before using them again. Also consider buying in bulk to save on individual packaging.

In our current global situation this might be an area you will want to look into further at a later date.

4. Upcycle furniture and décor

When setting up your lash room and salon, it is important to be wise when it comes to accounting and your spending. Especially when you are just starting your business. You have to be mindful of your capital and how you manage your bills.

If you have old furniture or accessories in your home you can use, use them. For example, the sofas you replaced last year or candle holders you are not using. Check if they are still usable. Don’t forget the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce your stored furniture, reuse them, and recycle. You will have more savings too.

Reduce, reuse, and recycle in lash salon. Cartel Lash

You can upcycle all your old furniture and accessories. Give them a new paint job and add some new color. Use them in your lash salon.

You can also go to your local shops and check what they have to offer. No need to purchase expensive stuff, just make sure your lash business looks comfortable and how you want to be. Your clients will not check the price tags of your décor and furniture. Their main priority is their eyelash extensions.

Decorating your lash business with plants is also a great idea. They are not only nice and pretty but also a source of oxygen. Also, they are very low maintenance and inexpensive. Plants also have a calming effect which is what your clients should feel when they enter your establishment.

5. Hand towels

Paper towels are made using pulp, water, and wood. The more people use it, the more the demand will increase, and more wood will be needed. Hence, more trees need to be cut. In addition, they are not reusable. You use them, you throw them. It adds to the garbage you need to dispose of.

Replace your paper towels with hand towels. They are more sustainable and reusable!

6. Eco-friendly packaging or paper bags

When your clients buy some products, you will need bags to put the products into. I highly recommend going for paper bags because your clients can reuse them. You can also offer specialized eco bags with your brand name and logo. It could be a brilliant and easy way to advertise your business.

You are decreasing plastic, encouraging clients to be more eco-friendly, and helping the environment.

7. Dispose of waste and recycle properly

These days, you can recycle almost everything. Make recycle bins available in your lash business. Let your employees know about it and help encourage them by being a good example.

The empty bottles should be thrown in the right bin and separated from the biodegradables. Make sure to have a separate bin for bottles as well. Lash artists handle a lot of products in small quantities to make sure they are fresh and usable. Because of this, you tend to have many empty bottles. Throw them in the right bin.

Then, go to your local recycling centers. Check what materials they can take in. This will decrease the trash you need to worry about.

8. Research and buy eco-friendly, quality products

Last on our list is to do your research and go for eco-friendly but high-quality products. There are various lash extension supplies and products available in the market. Look for the ones that are eco-friendly and sustainable.

Work with a brand or supplier with the same values and goals as yours. This is the most effective way to build trust and also get high-quality products at the same time.

Eyelash extension treatment products, tools, and equipment. Cartel Lash

There are many ways to make your lash salon more sustainable and eco-friendly. You don’t have to work too much or bend over backwards. Small steps are also acceptable and a great help, not only to the environment but also to your pockets.

A Simple Guide to Eyelash Extension Styles and Shapes

With the vast lash extensions styles and types to choose from, it might be hard to explain each one to your client. Most especially to new lash lovers because they won’t have any idea what works better for them. In this case, you should be able to explain easily so your clients can make a well informed decision.

This will also show your clients that you are a knowledgeable and experienced lash tech and help earn their trust.

Here are the eyelash extension types and styles that you should definitely explain to your clients:

Lash Extension Types

The most frequently asked question by lash lovers during eyelash extension application is “what is the difference between classic, hybrid, Russian volume, and mega volume lash extensions?” Especially by first-timers.

You need to explain these 4 lash extension types properly so that your clients will be able to make the right decision. You can also add some suggestions and recommend what looks flattering depending on their style and preferences.

Classic lash extensions

This type is called a classic for a reason. Classic eyelash extensions are simple, beautiful, timeless, and natural-looking. If your client wants to look gorgeous every day without putting on a lot of eye makeup, this is the way to go.

Classic eyelash extensions on woman. Cartel Lash

It is not too overpowering and glamorous. But the best thing about classic lash extensions is that they look natural and are great for first-timers.

Classic lash extensions are applied on a 1:1 ratio. Meaning, you will apply one lash extension to one natural lash. This way, it will not be too heavy for your natural lashes. They vary depending on length, material, curl type, and thickness. Make sure to point this out to your clients.

The whole classic eyelash extension application can take from 1.5 hours to 2 hours, depending on the look your client wants to achieve.

Hybrid lashes

It is exactly as the name suggests, hybrid. A mixture of two different lash extensions types. Hybrid eyelash extensions are a mixture of classic and volume eyelash extensions. There is no exact ratio used for applications for hybrids depending on the look your client wants. Sometimes lash artists go for 70% classic and 30% volume eyelash extensions.

Hybrid eyelash extensions on woman. Cartel Lash

This is a great way to enjoy both the natural look from classic lashes and the bold look from the volume lashes.

The most common example of celebrities who go for volume lash extensions is the Kardashians. If your client wants that same look but a bit tone down and looks more natural, go for hybrid eyelash extensions. Don’t forget to ask your client what length and look they prefer.

Always consult with your client if they are ok with applying extensions on their lash line. Because not all clients feel comfortable with this. But there are advantages to this. For example, applying lash extensions in the middle of each natural lash will create an eye-opening look. On the other hand, applying more eyelash extensions at the ends will add an eye-elongating look.

The whole hybrid lash extensions application can lash from 1 hour to 2 hours depending on the look and the percentage you will be using.

Russian volume lashes

This type is also called volume lash extensions, Russian volume lashes give a more dramatic and fuller look. This is great if your client is going to a party or a wedding because they provide a more glamorous look.

Russian lash extensions on woman. Cartel Lash

The main idea here is you, the lash artist will have to apply multiple lash extensions on a single natural lash. The lash extensions used for this are very light to make sure that will not be too heavy on your natural lashes causing breakage. Usually, the lash extensions used for this type range from 0.03 up to 0.07 mm.

The number of lash extensions applied will vary depending on the look your client wants to have. You can attach 2 up to 8, sometimes more. They are sometimes called 2D, 3D, 4D, etc. The number attached to the letter “D” corresponds to the number of lash extensions applied to a single natural lash.

Russian volume lash extensions usually take at least 2 hours up to 3 hours, sometimes even longer depending on the look your client needs.

Mega Volume Lashes

This can only be done by an expert and experienced lash technician. Because the lashes used for this type are very thin, usually 0.03mm. It takes a lot of precision and practice to be able to properly and evenly apply each lash extension.

Mega volume lashes on woman. Cartel Lash

Mega volume lashes are great for clients who want to have an edgy and super full look. The only requirement for this type of extension is your client needs to have strong and healthy natural lashes to be able to hold mega volume lashes. Otherwise, your natural lashes will not be able to hold the extensions causing them to break and fall off.

If your client wants to have mega volume lash extensions, make sure to put emphasis on their need to thoroughly clean their eyelashes. Dirt, dust, and debris tend to stick to the lashes and will need a thorough daily cleaning. Make sure to teach them how to properly clean their eyelash extensions.

The whole procedure will take at least 3 hours.

When you are explaining the lash extension types, it is best to ask your client first the look they want to achieve. This way, you can easily narrow down their choices. Don’t forget to check the state of their natural lashes because this is where the lash extensions will be attached to.

Lash Extension Styles

Aside from lash extension types, there are also eyelash extensions styles to take into consideration. Make sure to let your clients know about this.

Eyelash Extension Style Chart. of Types and Shapes for the eye. Cartel Lash

Remember, various lash salons offer different lash extension styles. However, these 5 are the most common ones:

Doll Eye

The most common example of celebrities with doll eyelashes are Megan Fox and Jessica Alba.

Its main goal is to provide more open and larger-looking eyes. The main concentration of extensions is located at the center of the eyes. Meaning long lashes are applied at the middle of each lash line making your eyes look bigger and fuller.

This is ideal for clients with wide-set eyes or downturned (dropping) eyes or for those who want a more open eye look. If your client has round eyes, doll eyelashes are not for you because they will make you look more surprised or even alarmed.

Cat Eye

The most common examples of celebrities with cat eyelashes are Angelina Jolie and Taylor Swift.

This is the usual go-to of a lot of lash lovers. Unlike the doll eyes where longer lashes are concentrated at the middle, cat eye eyelash extensions’ main concentration is at the outer eye corners. It gives a cat eye and a more exotic look, hence the name of this style.

If your client has rounder or close-set eyes, cat eyelash extensions are the way to go. I do not recommend this style for those clients with downturned eyes because it will make your eyes look exaggerated and make your eyes look even wider.

Open Eye

Open eye eyelash extensions are somewhat similar to doll eyes. It will help open up your eyes and make them look bigger. They have a slightly different shape. With the open eyelash extension style, the longer lash extensions are applied at the center but will have a slight peak above the client’s pupil. Then, tapering down at the ends.

Usually, the lash extensions used at the corners of the eyes are around 8mm. Then, increase up to 12mm and 14mm at the center of the eyes.

Natural Eye

The most common example of a celebrity with natural eyelashes is Blake Lively.

Natural eye eyelash extensions are the natural version of cat-eye. Compared to cat eyelashes, natural eyelashes don’t add too much volume to your lashes. However, they enhance the eyelashes and add a lovely and flirty look.

This is the only lash extension style that works with all eye shapes and lash types. They are great for everyday wear and add length to your natural lashes without making them look too dramatic. However, if your client wants a more dramatic look, you can go for a bolder style.

Dramatic Eye

The most common example of celebrities with dramatic eyelashes are the Kardashians.

To achieve dramatic eyelashes, you will need to apply a mixture of long and short lash extensions. This style provides more volume. It will look fluffy but if your client wants fluffier and thicker lashes, this is the way to go.

Beautiful woman with long eyelashes getting Eyelash extension treatment. Cartel Lash

But if your client has sparse and fine natural lashes, dramatic eyelashes will make it look too fluffy. This style will need more natural lash density.

How to choose the right one for your client

There are a lot of eyelash extension types and styles to choose from. For new clients, this can be very confusing. It is best to provide the best and easiest explanation to them so they can choose the best style and type that accentuates their looks. You can always help them choose.

Here are the things you need to consider when choosing the right eyelash extension type and style that works for your client:

Eye shape

Not all styles can be applied to a certain eye shape. Does your client have downturned eyes, almond-shaped eyes, round, upturned, etc? This will greatly limit the style and type of lash extensions that you can do on your client. You have to let your client know about this so they will not insist on a style that doesn’t work for them.

Face shape

Yes, your client’s face shape will help decide the eyelash extension style. If your client has a long or thin face, avoid super long lash extension styles. I highly recommend going for a cat-eye to enhance the curvature of your client’s eyes. Meanwhile, for clients with a round face, avoid those styles that put emphasis on the outer corners of the eyes because it will make their faces look wider. Go for doll extensions or styles with longer lashes in the center area.

Set of different types woman face. Oval, diamond, square, round, triangle shapes for eyelash extensions. Cartel Lash

Size of the eyes

Does your client have small eyes, large, or something in between? Choose a style that will flatter the size of their eyes.

Orientation of the eyes: The orientation and how far apart your client’s eyes are will greatly affect the eyelash extension style. For example, if your client has close-set eyes, I highly recommend going for cat-eye. Because it adds length to the eyes making them look longer. Check whether your client has wide-set, deep-set, or close-set eyes.

Eye color

The client’s eye color will affect the color of the extensions you can apply.

State of the natural lashes: You need to consider the health and state of your client’s natural eyelashes. The natural lashes need to be healthy and strong to be able to avoid breakages especially if your client wants volume lashes and mega volume.

Type of eyelids

Does your client have monolids or hooded eyelids? If your client has hooded eyelids, I highly recommend an open-eye style that adds length and fullness to the eyes. Meanwhile, for clients with monolids, go for a baby doll or cat eye because it adds length to the outer corners of the eyes making it look more appealing.

Preferences

You always have to consider your client’s preferences. This is the most important thing to consider. Make sure the look and style you do will make your client feel great about themselves.

In choosing the style and type of lash extensions for your client, I highly recommend taking into consideration their personal style and opinion. Use these tips for eyelash extensions that will look best on your clients and increase the amount of happy clients you'll have!

10 Stretches to Relieve Back Pain From Lashing

Back pain is a normal occurrence for all lash artists because the duration of an eyelash application can last for an hour up to more than 3 hours. Sitting in a chair for the entire duration, however comfy it is, can cause back pain. It is very important to do some stretching before and after each scheduled appointment to prevent any chronic and serious back problems.

The best and most effective way to prevent and relieve back pains due to prolonged sitting is by exercising, maintaining a healthy body and weight, posture and lastly stretching. Here are 10 lower back stretches you can do without needing any equipment or tools to relieve your back pain:

Cat Pose

Cat pose is an effective but gentle way to stretch your back. It extends your lower back into flexion and activates the vertebrae of your upper spine. This is the first half of the cat and cow pose.

Steps:

  1. Get on all fours or sit in a chair. Make sure your hands and knees are comfortably flat on the ground. Make sure your hands are straight and directly under your shoulders.
  2. Push your back up while exhaling. Make an upward arch just like when a cat is spooked.
  3. Continue in this position until you feel the stretch in your shoulder blades and upper back.
  4. Hold this position for 5 seconds.
  5. As you exhale, return to your starting position (in your hands and knees). Flat back in a neutral position.
  6. Repeat the whole process 9 times.

Chair Lower Back Stretch

Chair lower back stretch greatly helps realign and lengthen your spine. It also helps improve your body posture reducing the slouching and hunching of your shoulders.

Steps:

  1. Sit down in a stable chair. Don’t use chairs with wheels.
  2. Feet should be flat on the floor for proper support and balance.
  3. Inhale deeply while letting your torso and legs fall freely from your waist and hips. Don’t put too much pressure on your neck.
  4. Reach as far as you can and feel your back stretching and lengthening.
  5. Hold the position and breathe deeply for a few seconds.
  6. When you are ready, go back to the sitting position. Don’t stand up instantly. Let yourself adjust before standing up.

Cow Pose

Cow pose compliments the cat pose. In this pose you must lift your pelvis up and your navel down. You can combine the cat and cow pose to enjoy the best results.

Steps:

  1. Get on all fours. Make sure your hands and knees are comfortably flat on the ground. Make sure your hands are straight and directly under your shoulders.
  2. Push your back down while inhaling creating a downward arch like a slope-backed cow. Stretch your back further by lifting your pelvis up and dropping your navel to the ground.
  3. Hold this position for 5 seconds.
  4. As you exhale, slowly return to your starting position.
  5. Repeat the whole process 9 times.
  6. You can alternate and move from Cow to Cat pose (and vice versa) to get the best results.

Down Dog

Down dog is a forward bend stretch that will not only relieve your back pain but also strengthen and align your back muscles. This is very helpful for lash lovers who sit down for long periods of time. Doing down dog stretches regularly can help improve your body posture.

Steps:

  1. Start on all fours (on your hands and knees). Your palms should be wide apart, stack the shoulders over the wrists.
  2. Raise your knees off the mat and lift your hips high. Make sure your toes are pointing forward. Imagine you are an upside down V. At first, it will be hard for you to keep your knees straight but as your flexibility improves, your knees will straighten. For now, allow a slight bend in the knees.
  3. Hold this position for 5 to 10 breaths.
  4. Get back to the starting position.
  5. Repeat when desired. You can do it 2 to 3 times a day to relieve your back pain.

Forward Bend

A forward bend is a stretch done while standing. It helps relieve pain and tension in your hamstring, glutes, and spine while stretching your hips and legs. When you are doing the forward bend, you can feel your entire back opening up and lengthening.

Steps:

  1. Stand up. Make sure your heels are slightly apart to support your weight and help your balance while doing this stretch.
  2. Put your hands on your hips then slowly bend forward (at the hips) one vertebrate at a time.
  3. Put your hands towards the floor or a block. No need to worry if you can’t reach the ground. Go as far as you can.
  4. Slightly bend your knees, soften your hip joints, and let your spine lengthen.
  5. Let your head fall to the floor and tuck your chin in your chest.
  6. Hold the position for up to 1 minute.

Knee Fold Forward Stretch

Knee fold forward stretch is just like the forward bend, except sitting down and your knees are bent. You should feel your back lengthen and open up.

Steps:

  1. Sit down on the floor with both legs bent to the side. The other leg is bent like a butterfly stretch and the other one is bent backward like you are W sitting. Both knees should be bent at a 90° angle.
  2. Make sure your hips are square off to your left leg. Then bend forward and try to make your head touch your knees. Don’t worry if your head can’t touch your knees.
  3. Hold this position for 30 seconds.
  4. Then sit up and square off the right leg then bend forward at the hips.
  5. Hold this position for 30 seconds.
  6. Switch the legs and do the same steps.

Standing Trunk Extension Stretch

This is the easiest one to do. Standing trunk extension stretch helps relieve all the soreness and pain you feel in the back while increasing its range of motion.

Steps:

  • Stand up straight. Make sure your feet are shoulder width apart.
  • Place your hands on your hips.
  • Lean backward making an arch until you feel your back stretch.
  • Hold the position for 5 to 10 seconds.
  • Repeat for 2 to 5 times.

Seated Lower Back Rotational Stretch

This stretch is good for relieving any pain or stiffness in your lower back. Use a chair that allows you to put your feet flat on the ground.

Steps:

  • Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the ground, shoulder length apart.
  • Place your right hand onto your left knee
  • Twist your core to the left until you feel the stretch in your lower back
  • Hold for 10 seconds. Keep your posture straight
  • Slowly move back to the starting position
  • Alternate sides

Seated Side Stretch

Don’t forget to stretch the muscles along the side of your torso as well. Stretching these muscles can help relieve tension in your lower back and shoulders.

Steps:

  • Sit upright on the ground with your legs extended to either side (like the letter ‘V’)
  • Bend your left leg at the knee. Place the sole of your left foot alongside your right leg. If you are not able to do that, go as far as you comfortably can
  • Straighten your left arm and reach over your head to the right
  • Reach towards your right foot as far as you can. You should feel the stretch along the sides of your torso.
  • Hold for 10 seconds
  • Slowly move back into the starting position
  • Alternate sides

Seated Forward Fold Stretch

Seated forward fold stretch helps release the tension in your spine, stretch the lower back, and hamstring muscles. It also helps energize and wake up your brain and central nervous system. This is a great stretch to do before applying eyelash extensions.

Steps:

  • Sit upright.
  • Raise your arms above your head as you inhale.
  • Fold your body forward from your waist as you exhale.
  • Inhale deeply.
  • When you exhale, let your torso ease further into your thighs.
  • Make sure to not put any pressure on your neck so it won’t strain.
  • Spread your legs apart and let your neck drop while your shoulders are in between your knees. As much as possible, make sure not to spread your legs too far apart.
  • Relax your shoulders.
  • Hold this position for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat for 2 to 3 times.

There are many stretches you can do to relieve tension in your back in between lashing sessions. Some of these stretches you can do during the lash treatment to quickly release stress on your lower back. Don’t forget to pay attention to how your body is feeling and stretch those muscles especially when you have back-to-back lash appointments!

How to Navigate through Global Shortages as a Lash Tech

The global shortage we are all experiencing right now is very problematic most especially for lash techs and lash lovers. Because we all have certain lash products, tools, and accessories we use. Some of them even come from other countries like South Korea which are experiencing reduced production.

But with the shortage, it is a bit harder to order from other countries. But don’t worry, I collected 4 tips to help you maneuver around these global shortages that all of us are experiencing right now.

Why are shortages happening

Because of Covid-19, there is a global shortage for almost everything. Such as the lash supplies and tools you use in your lash extension applications. Why? Because many factories and manufacturers of many lash supplies are located in places like South Korea, Taiwan, Germany, and other countries which were hit hard by Covid-19. These factories are shut down and/or reduce their production because their employees are getting sick and to keep up with the World Health Organization’s requirements.

As a result, many shipping companies cut their schedules to anticipate the decrease in the production of these factories. This proved to be a mistake that affected the lash industry and spa services greatly. The demands for these products and lash supplies didn’t decrease. But the supply is low. The result, a shortage.

In addition, with the floods and Highway 1 closures in BC, the supply chain has been further disrupted.

Prioritize orders

As a lash tech, you need to learn how to prioritize the products you need or are about to finish. It is good practice to re-order products when you are halfway through them, especially if they are essential in doing lashes, such as lash adhesive.

Timing is key. When you are ordering from other countries, they will estimate how long it will take for your order to arrive, but keep in mind that delivery estimates are not guaranteed. Consider ordering locally, from places like Cartel Lash, located in British Columbia. Ordering from local businesses ensures that delivery times aren’t as long because of the proximity to you, also many businesses offer curbside pickup.

As a business owner, learning how to prioritize is also a great business strategy especially in these trying times.

Stay on top of inventory

Always be on top of your inventory. Track all the products, tools, and accessories. List down all the products you always use and are important for you to provide the best services. For example, lash adhesives, cleansers, sealants, primers, eyeliners, eyelash extension removers, tweezers, etc.

Make sure you are not running out of these products and supplies or your operation will be affected. List down all the products you order from other countries versus the ones you can order in your location. For all the products made from other countries, you might need to order them ahead so they will arrive on time. Take into consideration the shipping time and how long it takes to arrive at your doorstep.

Keep track of expiry dates

All lash supplies have specific expiration dates and shelf life. This will depend on the product and manufacturers. For example, lash adhesives. Lash glues contain cyanoacrylate, which is the bonding agent found in all adhesives, this ingredient breaks down over time. The longer they are in storage, in a not-so-ideal environment, the cyanoacrylate will break down faster than anticipated. Meaning, your lash adhesive will lose its efficiency and will not perform well.

My advice, before you put your lash supplies in storage take note of when they arrived and their expiration dates. Arrange them per expiration date, where the products that will expire sooner are at the front. This way, you can easily monitor and keep track of all the expiration dates of the products in your storage and also know which ones are running out.

Set realistic expectations for clients

When your clients order a product from you, it is best to set realistic expectations. For example, if a client is looking for a specific brand of lash cleanser for sensitive skin and you are almost out. You have to let your client know that you are almost out of this product and you will need to order more. Don’t tell them it will arrive the next week if you are not sure it will arrive then. Be realistic. It will be more of a hassle for you and your client if the product they ordered experiences shipping delays.

A good rule of thumb is to add a week or 10 days to the estimated delivery date. This way, even if the products arrive a few days later, your client will not be upset. And if they arrive earlier, your client will be pleased.

The global shortages are felt all over the world and in all industries. All we can do is adapt, work through it and move forward. The businesses that make adjustments and are realistic with their limits, will not perish and can still prosper even in these trying times.
